Sophos Anti-Virus (SAV) takes a radically different approach to on-access virus detection, avoiding the need to scan every file every time it is accessed. When a user attempts to access an unknown item, SAV carries out an automatic virus check. If the item is certified virus-free, its checksum is added to a list of authorised items and the user is free to access and re-access it without restriction. Subsequent virus checks are only carried out if the object is modified, e.g. due to the presence of a virus.
